Mentee Application Process
Who Can Become a Mentee?
It is imperative that the youth who participate in our program have a strong desire to commit to a mentoring relationship and are willing to take the risk of forming a new relationship. Other qualifications are as follows:
- Must be 10-17 years of age
- Must be referred through the school district
- Must be able to make a nine month commitment (entire school year)
- Must have a positive attitude
- Must obtain parental consent of mentoring relationship
- Must communicate regularly with program coordinator to discuss mentoring relationships.
The Mentee's Role
The youth must be committed to the relationship. The youth is expected to make him/herself relationally available to the mentor. Efforts must be shown to invest time, focus, and attention that is required to develop a healthy, positive relationship. Though the task of making new friends may be difficult, it is the youth's responsibility to seek support from the Program Coordinator to achieve this task. The youth is also required to keep an open line of communication with the Program Coordinator to provide weekly updates on the mentoring relationship and voice any questions, comments, or concerns.
The Parent/Guardian's Role
It is expected of the parent or guardian to show respect to their child's mentor. The parent or guardian must understand that the role of the mentor is to focus on working with their child; therefore, it is imperative that the parent/guardian supports the mentoring relationship and allows their child to develop a relationship with the mentor.
We ask that the parent/guardian maintain an open line of communication with the Program Coordinator as the mentoring relationship progresses to keep us informed of any concerns and questions that may arise during the course of the mentoring relationship.
Requirements
The application process includes a referral from a school official, a written application for both the youth and their parents, and a personal interview with the program coordinator. This program is referral based (in order to be in the program, a mentee must be recommended by a school official). A sample application form is attached below.
