Matching Mentors to Mentees

The Mentoring in Action program is designed to match youth in a one-on-one relationship with an adult that serves as a positive role model that will help identify and encourage the mentee to strengthen his/her personal strengths and interests. It is expected that our mentors commit one year (nine-month school year) to the program.

Our application process is designed to identify the youth's interests, needs, and preference for a mentor. The Program Coordinator will attempt to assess the personality of the youth through survey tools in order to closely match the mentee with a mentor who has related interest and strengths. The application process is also designed so that the parents have the opportunity to state desirable and undesirable characteristics a potential mentor might possess in order to identify the most suitable match.

The mentor application has a similar structure in which the adult is interviewed to attempt to identify his/her hobbies, skills, and interests, as well as a preference for a mentee. The mentor also has the opportunity to state desirable and undesirable characteristics a potential mentee may possess in order to identify the most suitable match.

These questions are not asked in judgment. The goal is to construct matches in a manner that all parties are comfortable with.

Once each party has completed the application and interviewing process, the Program Coordinator will create participant profiles and match pairs based on the information received. Each party will then be notified of the match and the Program Coordinator will set up arrangements for that match to meet. When the matches have been identified, there will be a trial period of three weeks and upon completion of that trial period, all parties must complete an “agreement match form” to officially begin that match.
